The University of Pecs is Hungary's oldest university and one of its largest higher education institutions, serving as the principal centre of knowledge in the Transdanubian region. Its origins lie in 1367, when Pope Urban V granted King Louis I permission to found a studium generale in Pecs; the modern institution descends from the Royal Hungarian Elizabeth University, which moved to the city in 1921.
