UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN

The University of Debrecen traces its roots to the Reformed College of Debrecen, founded in 1538, which makes it Hungary's oldest continuously operating institution of higher education. In its present form it was created in 2000 through the merger of several regional institutions, and it is today one of the country's largest public research universities. Based at Egyetem tér 1 in Debrecen, in the Hajdú-Bihar region of eastern Hungary, it comprises thirteen faculties spread across eight campuses arranged around a landmark main building and an extensive botanical garden. Roughly 34,000 students study there, including more than 7,700 international students drawn from some 140 countries, giving it one of the largest and greenest international campuses in Central Europe. More than eighty degree programmes are delivered entirely in English, spanning medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture and food science, informatics, economics and business, law, humanities, public health and music; the medical and health sciences programmes are especially well known among international applicants. The university was ranked 563rd in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Teaching emphasises practical, labour-market oriented knowledge, reinforced by partnerships with employers that give students professional experience before graduation.
