Study at University of Pecs
The University of Pecs is Hungary's oldest university and one of its largest higher education institutions, serving as the principal centre of knowledge in the Transdanubian region. Its origins lie in 1367, when Pope Urban V granted King Louis I permission to found a studium generale in Pecs; the modern institution descends from the Royal Hungarian Elizabeth University, which moved to the city in 1921. Today the university is organised into ten faculties - Business and Economics; Cultural Sciences, Education and Regional Development; Engineering and Information Technology; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Law; Music and Visual Arts; Pharmacy; Sciences; and the Medical School - supplemented by an independent faculty in Szekszard and programmes delivered in other Hungarian towns and abroad. Around 25,000 students are enrolled, of whom more than 5,700 come from over 146 countries, making it one of Hungary's most international campuses. More than 300 training programmes are offered in total, including over 100 full degree programmes taught in English and other foreign languages, with medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and engineering among the best known. Research is concentrated in the Szentagothai Research Centre, and the university holds the Hungarian government's Excellent University designation, one of only five institutions to do so. It also belongs to the European Digital University and European University Foundation alliances.
The University of Pecs runs ten dormitories in residential districts with easy access to the campuses and the city centre; most have been recently renovated and offer furnished rooms with private bathrooms, in-room internet, study rooms, lounges, bike storage, parking, a cafeteria and a student club. Monthly dormitory fees quoted by the university range from about 79,900 HUF for the Balassa and Szanto Wing D residences to 103,600 HUF for Damjanich. Students who prefer to live independently generally pay 80,000-200,000 HUF a month for a two-room apartment, excluding utilities and internet, with landlords usually asking for a deposit of one to two months' rent; the university lists English-speaking rental agencies that assist international students.
